Hiki Dashi is a high temperature technique simular to Raku originating around the same period in the 16th century in Japan. A simple glaze recipe ��� 1 part iron oxide and 2 parts wood ash (by volume) ��� yields a subtle, rich black to maroon brown, which ranges from dry matte to semi-gloss in texture. The pieces are glazed and loaded where thy can be observed and removed when mature. Hiki Dashi matures between cone 5 and cone 8, tempetures in excess of 2250 degrees. When the glazes are observed to have matured the pieces are removed from the kiln (hiki) and quenched in water (dashi). The subtle surfaces are highly prized for there evocation of wabi and sabi qualities.
